Exeter High Street c. 1900 for Exeter City Council Offices
Historical street scene. I took photographs of the Guildhall and existing buildings to copy, as well as coordinating with the Architectural historical department to find engraved images of missing medieval buildings which were bombed in WWII. Most of these were in the distance; the foreground buildings are still there including left side guildhall with pillars. One of the old gas lamps was found in the city Museum to copy. Exeter grew financially around the wool industry, and serge (strong wool cloth for suiting) production, as the many Devon hillsides were so suitable for sheep. Square sailed ships came right into the city quay exporting wool and importing wine and silk.
